1955-1961 CANADA Obsolete .00 BEATTIE-COYNE 1st Signature >NO LONGER USED Note
Description
This is a lightly used, still crispy, Two Dollars
"Modified Portrait"
note from the
"Bank of Canada"
. It is dated 1954 and was signed by the earliest signature combination for this type, Deputy Governor John Robert Beattie and Governor James E. Coyne. They were in office together from January 1, 1955 until September 10, 1961. Canada has long since dispensed with one & two-dollar bills in favor of coins, and no longer prints or circulates them.
In 1954 when these notes first came out, some people fancied they saw a leering demonic face in the highlights of the Queen's hair. The engraving was changed during this first Beattie-Coyne signature combination to remove the
"Devil's Face"
and this is the
"Modified Portrait"
.
